Rough Seasons

Hey there, beautiful souls,

Life can be a roller-coaster, with highs that make us feel invincible and lows that can sometimes feel overwhelming. It can make you feel as if you have been sucked into a vortex out of your control. At times, things are absolutely out of our control but still, we live within it. As a mindset coach and storyteller, I’ve seen firsthand how challenging it can be to maintain a positive outlook during difficult times. But I’ve also seen the incredible strength and resilience that a positive mindset can foster. Today, I want to share some tools and encouragement to help you navigate tough seasons with grace and optimism.

The Power of Positivity

First, let’s talk about why maintaining a positive mindset is so important. Positive thinking doesn’t mean ignoring the bad—it means facing life’s challenges with a hopeful and proactive attitude. This approach can reduce stress, improve health, and help us find solutions we might not see when we’re mired in negativity.

A bit of My Journey with Positivity

A few years ago, I went through a particularly tough season. I made the decision to leave a job I loved due to an extremely toxic environment. The choice was difficult and greatly effected my lifestyle and even my peer circle. Soon after, I faced the death of my father as well as health issues of my own that made everyday tasks feel like mountains to climb. During that time, I felt lost and overwhelmed, but I made a conscious decision to focus on the positives, no matter how small. There were days that I simply cried and felt paralyzed in grief and overwhelm. I started a gratitude journal, practiced mindfulness, and leaned on my incredible circle of close friends and confidantes. Gradually, I noticed a shift—not in my circumstances, but in my ability to handle them. That experience taught me the true power of a positive mindset.

Tools for Cultivating a Positive Mindset

  1. Gratitude Journal
    • What It Is: A daily practice of writing down things you’re grateful for.
    • How It Helps: Shifts your focus from what’s going wrong to what’s going right.
    • Tip: Start or end your day by jotting down three things you’re thankful for. They can be as simple as a warm cup of coffee or a kind word from a friend.
  2. Mindfulness and Meditation
    • What It Is: Techniques to stay present and calm your mind.
    • How It Helps: Reduces stress and increases your ability to stay centered amidst chaos.
    • Tip: Spend just 5-10 minutes a day focusing on your breath. Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you through simple meditations.
  3. Affirmations
    • What They Are: Positive statements you repeat to yourself.
    • How They Help: Rewire your brain to focus on positive thoughts and possibilities.
    • Tip: Write affirmations that resonate with you, like “I am resilient” or “I can handle whatever comes my way.” Repeat them daily, especially when you’re feeling down.
  4. Connect with Nature
    • What It Is: Spending time outdoors to rejuvenate your spirit.
    • How It Helps: Nature has a calming effect and helps you gain perspective.
    • Tip: Take a walk in the park, sit by a river, or simply step outside and breathe in fresh air.
  5. Lean on Your Support Network
    • What It Is: Reaching out to friends, family, or support groups.
    • How It Helps: Sharing your struggles lightens the load and offers new perspectives.
    • Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes, just talking about what you’re going through can be incredibly therapeutic.

Encouragement for Your Journey

Remember, it’s okay to have bad days. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. The goal isn’t to be relentlessly cheerful but to cultivate a mindset that helps you rise above challenges. Here’s a little encouragement for your journey:

  • You Are Stronger Than You Think: Tough times reveal your inner strength. Trust that you have the resilience to get through this.
  • Focus on What You Can Control: When everything feels out of control, focus on small things you can manage, like your breath, your thoughts, or your daily routines.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Celebrate your efforts and victories along the way.
  • This Too Shall Pass: Difficult seasons are temporary. Hold on to the belief that better days are ahead.
